“She who fights with monsters…”†

by Meritxell Riera Prims

The hardest test of them all: Jesus Christ faces the Devil all alone in the desert in a scene from Martin Scorsese‘s The Last Temptation of Christ (1988).

It’s funny how ego can be the greatest master. You can only defeat it -or rather become reconciled with it, ’cause ego CAN’T actually be defeated- by facing it.

It’s true what Nietzsche said:
“[…] if you gaze long enough into an abyssthe abyss will gaze back into you.“
But you’ve got to hold that gaze, stare into the monster’s eyes and realise how small it actually is. Then maybe pat him in the head with a smile, as if caressing a frightened little animal, turn around and leave in peace.

†A slight variation of Aphorism 146 from Friedrich Nietzsche‘s Jenseits von Gut und Böse: Vorspiel einer Philosophie der Zukunft (Beyond Good and Evil: Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future) (1886)
